Baranda, Edmund J.

Edmund is an IP lawyer in the Philippines with over 10 years experience. He has a background in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and is a qualified Patent Agent. Ms. Marta Bettinazzi is the new IP Advisor of the South-east Asia IPR SME Helpdesk project located in Ho Chi Minh City. Marta is in charge of delivering IPR trainings across South-east Asia, advising European SMEs on enquiries related to South-east Asia.

Marta holds a Master Degree in Law from the University of Pavia (Italy), and a Ph.D in Roman Law and European legal culture from the Universities of Pavia and Saarbrücken (Germany). She has also completed an LLM program in European and International Law at the Europa Institut in Saarbrücken (Germany), specializing in European Economic Law and IPR.

Previously she worked as lawyer in a law firm in Milan, and before that as a post doc researcher at the University of Pavia.


Binh, Nguyen Hoa

Irene Calboli is currently Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University and a Distinguished Fellow at the Royal University of Law and Economics in Cambodia. She is also Professor of Law at Texas A&M University School of Law, and Transatlantic Technology Law Fellow at Stanford University. Most recently, she was a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law of the National University of Singapore. She has also been Lee Kong Chian Fellow and Visiting Professor at Singapore Management University School of Law.

Dr. Calboli is an elected member of the American Law Institute, an associate member of the Singapore Academy of Law, and the immediate past Chair of the Art Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools. She is also a member of the Council of the International Law Association (Singapore Branch), the Board of the European Policy for Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Legislation and Regulation Committee of the International Trademark Association. She is a past member of the Executive Committee of the Intellectual Property Section and the Art Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools, and a past Co-Chair of the Professors’ Team of the Academic Committee of the International Trademark Association. She is also an active member of the International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP) and the Association Litteraire and Artistique Internationale (ALAI-USA).


Cheetham, Simon

Simon Cheetham is the Team Leader of the ASEAN IPR SME Helpdesk. He is an ASEAN IPR Enforcement expert with over 30 years' experience in commercial investigations, due diligence and IPR enforcement in South-East Asia and internationally. He has lived and worked in China and South-East Asia for over 17 years. He is also the Managing Director of ERINYES INTERNATIONAL LTD, a firm he founded to capitalise on his extensive experience of international investigations, loss prevention and enforcement work. He manages and directs the operations of the Company from Europe to the Far East.

Simon began his career with the Hong Kong Police, where he was responsible for the detection and prosecution of a wide variety of crimes. While in South-East Asia Simon was Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce IP Committee. He has lectured frequently around the world on security issues and IPR and has served as a short-term expert at ASEAN Seminar in Singapore and a speaker on the topic of Famous Marks and IP protection between borders within ASEAN. He is fluent in English and Cantonese.


Chow, Kin-Wah

Kin-Wah Chow is an executive at Rouse & Co. International LLP based in Jakarta. Previously, he worked in Singapore, China and Hong Kong advising on IP related issues and transactions. Dr. Cita Citrawinda is a registered IP Consultant and Mediator based in Jakarta. Andrew is uniquely qualified to advise foreign clients on Indonesian intellectual property issues. Severin received his law degree in 1978 from the “Vrije Universiteit” in Amsterdam. From 1978 until January 2007, Severin was an Intellectual Property partner in several European law firms and he is the founder of IPEG Consultancy Firm. Severin was engaged in both advisory and litigation work for multinational corporations in pharma and biotech, consumer electronics and semiconductor technology. From 2001 to 2004 he worked for Europe’s largest semiconductor equipment maker to assist and render strategy advise and support in a worldwide patent litigation against a major rival. He was, as a law firm partner involved in IP international arbitrations, defining and assisting to execute legal strategies and advising on IP contractual issues, enforcement programs and conducting intellectual property, information technology and competition law due diligence in mergers and acquisitions.

From 1998-2001 he was a part-time judge in the District Court of The Hague (Intellectual Property Chamber). He is a member of the editorial board of a Dutch intellectual property magazine (“IER”, “Intellectuele Eigendom & Reclamerecht”). Severin is also a key expert on the EU-Indonesia Trade Cooperation Facility (TCF), which aimes to improve the legal framework governing IPRs in Indonesia over the duration of the project. Severin joined the Helpdesk network in August 2013 and currently splits his time between Europe and Indonesia.

Somboon serves as the Director of the Tilleke & Gibbins’ Jakarta office. He has extensive experience handling a diverse range of IP matters across a multitude of Southeast Asian countries, particularly Indonesia. Somboon is well known for his vast knowledge of IP protection and he has presented on the topic to numerous organizations based in ASEAN. He is also an expert in formulating strategies for the successful management of worldwide trade mark portfolios as well as employing customized techniques for protecting and enforcing clients’ trade mark rights on a global basis. He specializes in international trade mark registrations, licensing, assignments, copyright recordal, software recordal, and in reviewing and constructing distributorship contracts.

Somboon represents several giant Thai companies (private and public) in investing and protecting their trade marks in both domestic and overseas markets. He also devotes much time to teaching Thai entrepreneurs about the importance of intellectual property rights. Franck is managing partner and founder of Ananda Intellectual Property, one of Thailand’s leading IP law firms. He is active in various IP organizations across Asia and in particular as Thailand country representative for the Asian patent Attorney Association (APAA) chair on Emerging IP Rights. Robert is a dual-qualified intellectual property solicitor and registered trade mark attorney. He covers all aspects of intellectual property specialising in portfolio management and has experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters. His particular specialisation within IP is managing trade mark and design portfolios.

Before founding Sipara, Robert headed the trade mark group at a large UK-based IP firm where he was responsible for much of the firm’s work in this field throughout Asia. Robert has established an excellent reputation acting for IP holders before the UK IP Office and the EU trade marks Office (OHIM) and has appeared before the Appointed Person and appealed cases from OHIM’s Board of Appeal to the European General Court. Nic Garnett, a consultant with Inter Right (Asia) Co. Ltd , is an internationally recognised expert on the management and protection of copyrights, and a leading lawyer in e-commerce. Nic has represented major online content service providers and rights holders in the licensing of exploitation rights in Asia, the United States and across the European Union. He has advised a wide range of international clients on diverse aspects of e-commerce and internet law, including areas such as security, data privacy, distance selling, e-money, and website contracting. His knowledge of digital media technologies, especially those deployed in the protection of copyrights, has led to extensive advisory work with clients such as the UK Government and the World Intellectual Property Organization, for whom he has written a number of major studies on the relationship between copyright and technology.

A UK-qualified lawyer, Nic holds a postgraduate degree (D.E.A.) in French private law from the Université de Bordeaux, and he received his Masters of Arts in Law from the University of Cambridge. He spent 10 years in Silicon Valley working as both in-house counsel and as a business consultant in the digital media field. His previous assignments include leading the international music recording industry’s anti-piracy efforts in Asia and in Eastern Europe, as well as the organisation’s standardisation efforts in new technology. Mr M. Ravindran graduated from the National University of Singapore and was called to the Singapore Bar in 1988. He also graduated from the South-East Asian Patent Drafting programme conducted by the Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI). He has been a registered patent agent since the inception of the patent agents register in Singapore in 2002. Ravi founded the firm in 1993.

Ravi has written a book on Singapore trade mark law published by LexisNexis entitled “Trade Mark Act – A Commentary”.
